Best Time to Visit Valley of Fire State Park The Aztec sandstone gives the illusion that the area is on fire and that is where the name originated from. It sits around 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas and is renowned for its unique, red rock formations dotted throughout the Nevada desert landscape. Valley of Fire State Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the United States and it is not even a designated National Park (although it impresses like one). I’m glad we were able to park so close and get in for a visit. I was surprised by how different the state park seems from the area outside of it. It was really cool to finally see Valley of Fire. But there was nothing that was loud enough to disrupt working or Netflix. On the weekdays things get a little louder with work trucks and trains running all hours across the road. ![]() The site was surprisingly quiet on weekends, except for the trucks full of hunting dogs that drive by occasionally. Our Verizon LTE was decent – 27 down, 3 up, plenty for YouTube! Good news though, we spoke to a campground in town (located next to the Maverick gas station) that said they offer their dump/fill for $5.Īnother big plus for us was the data coverage. Something exciting that we discovered upon this visit is that the management area offers one dumpster for campers to use. But the overall privacy of your site definitely varies depending on which spot you get.Įach site is screened by trees and brush, but some of the spots have foliage that doesn’t span far enough to give you the blocking you might like. I tend to think that this is because each site is a little different. They all come with a provided awning, grill, and fire ring. This was actually our second time staying here and it was a lot nicer than I remember. It’s only about one hour from the Vegas Strip, Valley of Fire State Park is only a couple miles away, and the town of Overton has its own “Lost City” museum with rebuilt ruins on display. That’s one of the best things about the Overton Wildlife Management Area: it’s overall location. We were thrilled to leave Mead, but we still needed to be relatively close to the Las Vegas Airport. ![]() Overton Wildlife Management Area - Overton, Nevada Plus, if you’ve ever stayed there then you know that it’s overcrowded and just generally gross. We were going to spend a week or two camping at Lake Mead, but it just ended up not being what we wanted to do. ![]() We had a couple of people come visit and on top of that, its hard to find warm weather destinations this time of year. ![]() Okay, you’re right, “excellent” is a relative term… But it’s free so we’ve gotta be at least half way to excellent, right?Īs usual, we spent a lot more time than planned around the Vegas area. Hello there travelers! It’s been a really long time since I wrote anything meaningful… which means I think it’s time to talk about an excellent free camping spot. ![]()
